How to get a 15% discount at the Apple online store from your own home (you’ve got to be a student though).

by Mike on August 18, 2010

Where Apple make desirable and well built products, their pricing is usually too keen for students who are assumed to have tighter budgets than normal. To help students along, Apple provide a rather helpful 15% discount for most of their hardware, software and accessories (excluding the iPhone).

Apple doesn’t want just anyone getting these discounts and so to get them they require you to place your student discounted order over the phone, in person at an Apple Retail store or online – the caveat being that Apple force you to log in from your university campus network.

Or do they?

If, like me, you prefer to look through all the options in the comfort of your own home, pondering carefully the options and accessories and weighing up different configurations against your budget you might feel a little perturbed by Apple’s insistence that you go through a salesperson to make the sale. Generally a student wouldn’t have access to the campus network before their first induction day and you can forget cash back deal sites like Quid Co working on some campus networks.

As Vicky is starting a Higher Education course at Thames Valley University this year and I *cough*, I mean, she, could use a new Macbook Pro, I scoured Google for information on Apple’s secretive student discount scheme. On one hot internet deals forum for UK residents, I found this link: http://store.apple.com/uk_edu_5000716. It seems to be a public URL to the same store that you would get if you logged into the campus network of the “London Academy of Music & Dramatic”. All the discounted prices were there, but I’m not suggesting for a moment that anyone should use this link illegitimately – but I need the Thames Valley University link and the Apple online chat staffers simply won’t give it to me. I know they’d prefer their overly happy staff give us the hard sale instead.

image

The public URL has an inviting integer at the end of it, one for each University. So I did what any self-respecting software developer would do. I went to get a Pot Noodle and ten minutes later, I had all of the URL’s for every Higher Education student discount Apple Store page in a handy text file.

The code (written in VB.NET – it’s messy but it does the job):

Imports System
Imports System.IO
Imports System.Net

Public Module Apple_HE_Code_Crawler

Public Sub Main()

Try
Dim URL As String = “http://store.apple.com/uk_edu_”
Dim ReadLine As String = “”

Console.WriteLine(“Crawler Apple Store for HE discount store codes”)

For n As Integer = 5000800 To 5000866
ReadLine = FetchHTML(URL & n)
Console.WriteLine(“Found University ” & ReadLine)
File.AppendAllText(“Z:\Apple_HE_Agreements.txt”, “ID: ” & n & ” equals ” & ReadLine & vbCrLf)
Next

Console.WriteLine(“Process Complete”)
Console.ReadKey()

Catch ex As Exception
File.AppendAllText(“Z:\Apple_HE_Agreements.txt”, “An unhandled exception occured: ” & ex.ToString)
Console.WriteLine(“An error occurred.” & ex.ToString)
End Try

End Sub

Private Function FetchHTML(ByVal URL As String) As String
FetchHTML = “”
Try
Dim client As WebClient = New WebClient
Dim data As Stream = client.OpenRead(URL)
Dim reader As StreamReader = New StreamReader(data)
Dim str As String = “”
str = reader.ReadLine
If Not str Is Nothing Then
Do Until reader.EndOfStream
If Not str Is Nothing Then
If str.Contains(“s.prop2″) Then
data.Close()
client.Dispose()
Return str.Split(“=”)(1)
End If
End If
str = reader.ReadLine
Loop
End If

data.Close()
client.Dispose()
Return “”

Catch ex As System.Net.WebException
If ex.Status = WebExceptionStatus.ProtocolError Then
If DirectCast(ex.Response, System.Net.HttpWebResponse).StatusCode = HttpStatusCode.NotFound Then
Console.WriteLine(“HTTP 404: Page not found” & ex.ToString)
Return “No university found for supplied ID (HTTP 404)”
End If
End If

End Try

End Function

End Module

So now, if you’re a student of one of the below institutions – you can get your student discount and you don’t have to talk to Apple staff and you don’t have to log on in a busy library or campus network. Just make sure you’re a genuine student, because if you’re using one of these codes fraudulently it’s not my fault if your order gets declined when you can’t prove you’re studying there.

I phoned up the Apple Education line this morning and asked whether I would be able to get the discount even though my place at university hadn’t *technically* been confirmed yet (I’ve been told via email that I’ll be getting an offer but I’m still waiting), if I placed an order and then sent confirmation of my place to them within seven days.

As I am actually going to be a student there in September, do you think I could use the University of East Anglia code now and then send confirmation once I get it, that is, if they even ask?

I found this post extremely useful, as I will be going to University this September. I knew that there was a higher rate of discount for University students, as opposed to the third option on the online Apple Store which only offers a limited discount on products. Because of the usefulness to this, I have included a link to a post on my own website about purchasing Macs for uni.

Thanks!

Thanks Samuel,

I found your article on searching for a laptop for Uni very interesting! Way back when I was at University, I found an IBM ThinkPad for about £150 whilst in my second year. It was small and portable and pretty rugged for it’s time, although it wasn’t particularly fast or enjoyable to use…

The market today is enviable for a Uni laptop and I can heartily recommend the Macbooks, particularly during the “Back to School” promotion that Apple runs around June (if you can wait that long).

To everyone in a similar boat to Samuel, looking for a Uni laptop – his experiences make for a good read: http://samuel-gould.com/2012/04/13/where-to-buy-a-macbook-for-university/#more-987

Thanks Mike, I found that a lot of my mates where asking the same thing as I was, so this page has proven useful to us all. One question, our HR establishment at the moment isn’t listed on there, is there a way of finding out if it has it’s own page or not?

Mike April 13, 2012 at 3:30 pm

Hi Samuel,

I’m sorry to hear that the establishment isn’t on the list. Unfortunately there’s no easy way to find out if it has it’s own public URL. I would have thought it does, but I don’t know what it is, sorry :(

If I were you, I’d log in from the University Library at the soonest opportunity and see if the URL code is shown while browsing the store or hovering the mouse over any of the hyperlinks on the page).

All the best,

Mike

this is brilliant! I finished uni two years ago and my macbook was only three years old then and couldn’t justify getting a new mac at the time.. I was going to just walk into Uni and ask one of my lectures if i could use their computer for five minutes.. or log into a free computer in the labs that have a generic username and password! This article will save me the hassle! many thanks!

None of the discounts seem to be anywhere near 15% anymore. I am still a uni student and only I save a total of £10 on most items.

I’ve just ordered a MBP from the Thames Valley University/University of West London site using the code above. By accepting the T&C, I declared that I’m entitled to purchase under the education conditions. That’s it. No further questions asked. I just received my order confirmation email, which means that my order has been accepted by Apple. Happy times! :D

Matt May 15, 2012 at 11:48 pm

Mike,
What will Apple want from you to get the discount if I buy online? Is it just reading to them details over the phone or something? Basically its for my friend, said she used to use a discount card to get student discount from places, such as food, cinema etc. Question being does she need to provide this discount code or just any proof that shes a student? She wants to buy one but she graduates in July so she hasn’t paid for a new discount card if that’s what you need. Please help and thanks!

Reply

Mike May 16, 2012 at 12:42 am

Hi Matt, any proof will suffice. Apple may ask you to upload an image to prove student status before releasing the order.

Was wondering how you can still use quidco/topcashback from an external computer seen as you have to enter a new address in the address bar. It will then no longer be tracked by quidco?

Reply

Mike June 12, 2012 at 8:28 pm

Hi Mr Bowden,

That’s right. If you use a direct link, you cannot use QuidCo/TopCashback. You >might< be able to get cashback if you log in from University/College however there is no guarantee it will track since the cashback sites’ offers appear to be based upon retail, and not student pricing.

Reply

Josh June 24, 2012 at 6:32 pm

From Quidco you need to choose the cashback offer that has these details:
“Students, teachers and staff get an £70 iTunes Gift Card when they buy a Mac, and you can save even more on a Mac with education pricing on the Apple Online Store for Education* (more details)”

Quidco then provide an edu URL affiliate link that looks like this (will be unique to your visit):
http://store.apple.com/uk-edu?afid=QUIDCOAFFILID

Replacing the URL with:
http://store.apple.com/uk_edu_5000XXX?afid=QUIDCOAFFILID

Should do the trick to getting it to track. Otherwise the safest bet is to do it from your Universities Campus/Network

Re: Mike’s comment there is currently an EDU link available on Quidco however if this isn’t always there there is also a separate Quidco for NUS card holders that does always have the edu cash back links:

http://nus.quidco.com/home/

So what exactly happens when you order offsite through one of these links? Will Apple definitely ask you for confirmation of a Uni place? How will they ask you?

Reply

Elliot June 13, 2012 at 10:57 pm

Great article, thanks for putting the effort in! One question about proof, do you think a screenshot of my accepted conditional offer on the UCAS site would be enough? Or do they require something like an ID card or other proof from the university?

Thanks!

I took advantage of the student discount around 3 years ago in the Apple store, which was so helpful at the time. I was just looking for the percentage discount that University students get, since I never got around to looking at the pages on the Uni campus last year.

I worked out that there isn’t a 15% store-wide discount on the Macs, but rather a scale of discount. For example, the 2.3GHz gives you 11% off the retail price, where as the 12-Core Mac Pro gives a whopping 19% discount.

Basically, the more expensive the computer, the more the discount that Apple gives! Might be worth updating the article with this, as I thought it was a static 15% across everything which it might have been previously, but I hope it helps anyway! I’ve listed the retail price, University price and percentage discount below :) (The product names were too hard to format in the comment field)

Thanks for this. However, there doesn’t seem to be a code for Warwick (my guess is that it belongs in the empty 5000852 slot). Do you think I could get away with ordering it from a different uni’s HE store, or would I be better off ordering over the phone? It’s just… I hate talking to salespeople!

The code for Warwick University is: 5002640. I’m not sure if this was the case when Mike originally compiled his list but all of the edu codes and their corresponding universities are available via the store’s page source (http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/education_routing/find_your_institution), just search for ‘uniDataModel’.

Just ordered a shiny new 2012 MacBook. And I didn’t get any questions about proving student id for those of you wondering. Order shipped within a few hours and I’ve saved a pretty penny. Also, all HE orders come with a complimentary 3 year hardware applecare service, worth around £200 depending on the model you order.

Great work Mike, I owe you a beer.

I’ve been using the direct link to my University’s HE Apple Store since my first year, and I have never been asked for my Student I.D. or for other proof that I was at university. I have purchased a MacBook Pro, iMac and iPad 2, receiving discount for all. If you try to buy something that you are not entitled for Apple have the right to refuse your sale and have to refund you the money if they check and find that you are not a valid HE student.

This is from the HE Store’s terms and conditions for buying:

2. Placing Your Order
2.1 To place an Order you must be 18 years of age or over and be accessible by non cellular telephone. In order to benefit from the special discounts on the Apple Store that has been set up for those eligible to purchase under the HE National Agreement you must be either a registered student and possess a valid student I.D. or you must be engaged or employed by an eligible education institution and be entitled to purchase in accordance with the terms and conditions of the HE National Agreement and must require the Produce for your own use or for classes or for research. Apple is entitled at anytime to require that you produce evidence of your entitlement to purchase under this provision. Apple reserves the right to cancel your order in its absolute discretion if we should determine that you are not a student, teacher or lecturer at an education institution entitled to purchase in accordance with the terms and conditions of the HE National Agreement and/or that you do not require the Product for your own use or for teaching or research purposes. We will inform you if we cancel your order on the above basis. Any payments you have made will be refunded to you.

I live abroad atm and even without student discount Apple devices here are much cheaper than Apple’s UK HE discount. Wonder when capitalists and opportunists in UK will stop taking advantages to UK community. Rich become richer. High earner only need to pay less for tax (some can even dodge it) while commoner like us pay nearly 20%. Inflation has come to its lowest point since 2009 but we still pay for ripped off items! Student (or low income earner) should be banned from paying VAT

Reply

Jim August 21, 2012 at 2:08 am

the government to blame here, but not sure how students not paying VAT would work. would it be another card to carry around? and not every store will take it?? we have to pay to get discount, like NUS card??

also, you would have to prove you’ve been a student for the time you say you have. many students drop out, so why should they continue to benefit??

plus you would get students buying everything, for everyone.

no, not viable at all, i’m afraid… but i do agree we should get discount on EVERYTHING and not have to pay for the card… NUS *ahem* scum *ahem*

I have just used the link, I am a genuine Open University student and I live nowhere near the campus – it would have cost me the amount I saved just on fuel. Successfully bought an ipad + smartcase (solid hard one), both engraved. Altogether I paid £426, saving a total of £35, AND I got a free appstore card for £35 worth of apps so including that I’ve saved/benefited by £70.

I used this – worked a treat – 15% off an imac 27inch i7 etc etc really added up. They messed up delivery about 6 times and gave me £70 off on top… and a £60 app store gift card. All of that and they still made a healthy profit no doubt… so I don’t feel at all bad that I’m not even a student.

Cheers,

For those of you doubting this works…

I was a student and took advantage of the discount at Uni. After leaving i then went back and placed a new order, and then I helped another friend order a Mac at the Uni even though she wasn’t a student there. All she got was a phone call asking what Uni she goes to and confirmed the order. So just remember what uni code you used in case they call you up!

I’ve not been at uni for 3 years, but the links work great and I’ve just blagged a nice shiny new iPad. Many thanks for the hard work!

ummm, wow, you bought an iPad with student discount… a whole £12. WOW!!! that’s on basic model.

although, in their terms and conditions it states – Purchaser must be eligible for Apple Education Individual Pricing; education pricing is not available for iPad. – so no discount on iPad??

so, did you really get a discount, or were you a bit over excited and never noticed?! =P

I don’t understand how non-students can justify using this discount!

Sure, there is a large saving but doesn’t the fact that you are abusing the privilege given to students weight on your conscience?!

Seriously, if you aren’t a student deal with the fact that you have to pay full price or if you aren’t ordering a built-to-order Mac then buy from Amazon UK who offer a £100 saving.

Reply

Jim August 21, 2012 at 2:04 am

I’m going to be going to university next year but this is probably the last chance I’ll have to buy a MPB before I leave uni, as I make my spending money from photography, and my last job got me just enough to buy one. I won’t be working again now either so I can concentrate on nailing A2 levels, and I don’t want my parents to fork out for it. So I’ll give it a shot today before I end up spending the money on something else (inevitable), will report back later.
